Description: “Everybody’s Talking About Jamie,” a 2021 film, is a story about Jamie New, a teenager with big dreams. During a school session, Miss Hedge, a careers teacher, asks her class about their future aspirations. Jamie, who faces teasing for his sexuality, reveals his desire to become a drag queen. Despite his openness, Miss Hedge dismisses his dream as unrealistic.
At home, Jamie’s mother, Margaret, and family friend Ray prepare for his 16th birthday. Jamie receives a card from his estranged father, which features a race car image. Margaret gifts him a pair of red high heels, symbolizing her support. Though hesitant to wear them outside, Jamie eventually embraces his identity.
At school, Jamie shares his new heels with his best friend, Pritti, but faces bullying from Dean, a classmate who mocks his sexuality and Pritti’s Muslim faith. Jamie stands up to Dean, and Pritti encourages him to wear a dress to prom. Jamie confidently parades around in his heels, showcasing his growing confidence.
Later, Jamie visits Victor’s Secret, a shop specializing in drag queen attire, where he befriends Hugo, the owner and a former drag queen. Hugo mentors Jamie, books his first drag show, and helps him choose a dress for the performance.
Meanwhile, Margaret confronts Jamie’s father, who rejects Jamie, claiming he’s not a “real boy.” Struggling with the emotional fallout, Margaret reflects on her life choices and what might have been if she had never met Jamie’s father.
The film celebrates self-expression, acceptance, and the courage to chase one’s dreams, making it an inspiring tale for audiences everywhere.
