Description: In May 1996, multiple commercial expeditions gathered at the base of Mount Everest, preparing to climb to the summit. Rob Hall, who pioneered commercial Everest expeditions, led Adventure Consultants, while Scott Fischer served as the chief guide for the rival group, Mountain Madness. Among Rob’s clients were Beck Weathers, an experienced climber; Doug Hansen, a former mailman fulfilling his lifelong dream; Yasuko Namba, a seasoned climber aiming to complete her Seven Summits challenge; and Jon Krakauer, a journalist from *Outside* magazine. Helen Wilton managed Rob’s base camp operations.
Before leaving for Everest, Rob had bid farewell to his pregnant wife, Jan, in New Zealand, promising to return in time for their child’s birth. At the base camp, he received a fax from Jan, revealing they were expecting a daughter. Rob suggested naming her Sarah, but Jan disagreed.
Concerned about overcrowding on the mountain, Rob urged Scott to collaborate to minimize delays. During the summit attempt, Rob’s group departed Camp IV before dawn, aiming to reach the summit and begin descending by 2:00 PM to ensure a safe return before nightfall. However, the group was delayed by over an hour due to uninstalled guide ropes on the upper sections of the climb. Beck, experiencing vision problems, paused, and Rob advised him to return to base camp if his condition didn’t improve within half an hour. Scott, who had descended to assist another climber, planned to re-ascend, prompting Rob to caution him against overexertion.
Rob reached the summit on schedule and was joined by Yasuko, who triumphantly planted her Japanese flag. On the descent, Rob encountered Doug struggling near the Hillary Step and urged him to turn back. Doug insisted on continuing, believing this might be his only chance. Reluctantly, Rob agreed, and they reached the summit two hours late. Doug, exhausted and suffering from altitude sickness, faced severe challenges. Scott, also exhausted, struggled with high-altitude pulmonary edema.
As Rob assisted Doug down, a sudden blizzard struck. Doug’s oxygen tank ran empty, leading to hypoxia. With no extra oxygen bottles stored along the route as Rob had requested, he radioed Helen for assistance. In a tragic moment of disorientation, Doug detached himself from the guide rope, stumbled along the narrow path, and fell silently to his death.
