Description: The film *Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance* (2009) follows the intense events surrounding NERV and the Evangelion units. The story begins with the Third Angel breaking free from NERV’s arctic Bethany Base. Mari Illustrious Makinami, a new pilot, launches Evangelion Provisional Unit-05 to confront the Angel, destroying it through self-destruction while escaping safely. Meanwhile, Shinji Ikari and his father Gendo visit the grave of Shinji’s mother, Yui.
The Seventh Angel attacks soon after but is swiftly defeated by Asuka Langley Shikinami, the bold pilot of Eva Unit-02. Gendo receives a mysterious suitcase, known as the “Key of Nebuchadnezzar,” from Ryoji Kaji, who confirms the planned destruction of Unit-05. Gendo and Kozo Fuyutsuki then visit NERV’s lunar base, Tabgha, to inspect the construction of Evangelion Mark.06, a unique EVA. However, they are denied landing permission and briefly witness Kaworu Nagisa floating in space without a suit.
In Gendo’s absence, the Eighth Angel attacks Tokyo-3. Shinji, Asuka, and Rei manage to defeat it using a strategy devised by Misato Katsuragi, though both Unit-00 and Unit-01 are damaged. Gendo requests repairs for both, but SEELE permits only Unit-01 to be fixed.
Rei organizes a dinner to mend the strained relationship between Gendo and Shinji. Meanwhile, Mari arrives in Tokyo-3, and the destruction of Unit-04 during an experiment forces the U.S. government to send Unit-03 to Japan. Due to restrictions on the number of active Evangelions, Unit-02 is sealed, and Asuka volunteers to pilot Unit-03 in place of Rei, avoiding the dinner. However, the Ninth Angel possesses Unit-03 during the test, causing chaos. Shinji hesitates to fight, fearing for Asuka’s safety. Gendo activates the Dummy System, forcing Unit-01 to brutally destroy Unit-03, leaving Shinji emotionally devastated and prompting him to leave NERV.
