Ray Breslin, a former prosecutor, is the co-founder of Breslin-Clark, a security company that specializes in testing the defenses of maximum-security prisons. Driven by the tragic loss of his wife and child to an escaped convict he once prosecuted, Breslin is known for his unparalleled ability to break out of any prison.
When Breslin and his partner, Lester Clark, are approached by CIA operative Jessica Miller, they are offered a lucrative deal to evaluate a top-secret prison designed to hold high-profile, disappeared individuals. The condition is that Breslin and his team will not know the prison’s location. Despite his reservations, Breslin agrees and is captured under the identity of a terrorist-for-hire. However, the plan backfires when his captors remove his implanted tracking microchip and drug him, leaving his team in the dark about his whereabouts.
Upon awakening in the prison, Breslin discovers that the warden, Hobbes, is not the expected contact for his emergency release. He befriends Emil Rottmayer, an inmate who claims to be a security expert working for Victor Mannheim, a mysterious Robin Hood-like figure. To gain access to solitary confinement, Breslin and Rottmayer stage a fight. Inside the cell, Breslin identifies a critical weakness: the steel rivets in the floor can be weakened by heat.
With Rottmayer’s help, Breslin obtains a metal plate to reflect the cell’s intense lights onto the rivets, causing them to expand and loosen. After escaping through a hidden passage, Breslin makes a shocking discovery—the prison is housed inside a massive cargo ship in the middle of the ocean.
