Description: In a dystopian version of 1988, the United States government transforms Manhattan into a massive maximum-security prison to combat a 400% surge in crime. The island is encircled by a 50-foot wall, bridges are mined, and the rivers are patrolled by helicopters. All prisoners are sentenced to life without parole.
In 1997, Air Force One is hijacked by a guerrilla fighter while transporting President John Harker to a peace summit in Hartford. Secret Service agents attach a tracking device to the President’s arm and handcuff him to a briefcase of sensitive documents before placing him in the plane’s escape pod. The aircraft crashes, but the pod is ejected.
The police are sent to rescue the President. However, Romero, the right-hand man of the Duke of New York—a powerful crime lord—shows them a severed finger bearing the President’s signet ring and threatens his life if further rescue attempts are made. Meanwhile, former Special Forces soldier Snake Plissken is about to be sent into Manhattan after being convicted of robbing the Federal Reserve. Police Commissioner Bob Hauk offers Snake a deal: if he rescues the President in time for the summit, Hauk will arrange a full presidential pardon. To ensure compliance, Snake is injected with micro-explosives that will kill him in 22 hours unless the mission is successful.
Using a stealth glider, Snake lands atop the World Trade Center and tracks the President’s signal to a vaudeville theater, only to find the device on a deluded vagrant. Convinced the President is dead, Snake contacts Hauk but is warned that he will be shot down if he returns without the President.
