No one has ever escaped from Alcatraz… and no one ever will!|Jan. 25, 1979|113 Min.
Genre: Drama;Thriller
Description: In early 1960, Frank Morris, a highly intelligent criminal played by Clint Eastwood, arrives at the maximum-security prison on Alcatraz Island after escaping from other facilities. The Warden, portrayed by Patrick McGoohan, asserts that Alcatraz is unparalleled in its security levels and that no inmate has ever successfully fled. During their conversation, Morris discreetly steals a nail clipper from the desk.
Morris soon befriends several inmates, including Litmus, who has a sweet tooth; English, a black inmate serving two life sentences for self-defense; and Doc, an elderly man who creates paintings and once grew chrysanthemums on the island. Morris also clashes with a rapist named Wolf, who attacks him both in the showers and the prison yard. Both men are later placed in solitary confinement.
After Morris is released from isolation, the Warden discovers that Doc has painted portraits of him and other guards. Despite their accuracy and flattery, he cruelly revokes Doc’s painting privileges. Depressed, Doc mutilates his hand with a hatchet from the prison workshop.
Morris later reunites with brothers John and Clarence Anglin, fellow bank robbers, and collaborates with inmate Charley Butts. Noticing weak concrete around his cell’s grille, Morris devises an escape plan. Over months, he and his allies dig through their cell walls using makeshift tools, create papier-mâché dummies as decoys, and build a raft from raincoats in preparation for their daring escape.
