Description: Ernest and Celestine is a 2012 animated film that tells a heartwarming tale of friendship and breaking societal norms. Celestine, a young mouse, lives in the underground world of rodents. At her orphanage, the Gray One warns her about the dangers of bears, but Celestine remains skeptical. Passionate about drawing, she is instead forced to study dentistry, a common profession for rodents. To prepare, she ventures above ground to collect bear cubs’ lost teeth from under their pillows.
During one of these trips, Celestine is caught by a bear family and trapped in a trash can overnight. The next day, Ernest, a starving and desperate bear, finds her and tries to eat her. Celestine cleverly convinces him to spare her by helping him break into a candy shop. While Ernest indulges in sweets, he is caught and arrested. Celestine, behind on her tooth-collection quota, strikes a deal with Ernest: she’ll free him if he helps her steal teeth from a dentist’s office.
Though their plan succeeds at first, they are soon chased by police from both the mouse and bear communities. Escaping in a stolen van, they find refuge in Ernest’s remote cabin. Initially reluctant to let Celestine stay, Ernest warms up to her after discovering her love for art. He shares his own story of rejecting his family’s legal legacy to pursue his dream of becoming an entertainer. Together, they enjoy a peaceful winter, though their happiness is shadowed by constant news alerts about their ongoing manhunt.
The film beautifully explores themes of friendship, individuality, and overcoming prejudice.
