Description: In a futuristic dystopian society, individuals referred to as “members” exist under the governance of the Collective, a legislative entity that oversees and regulates their actions. The citizens are mentally stabilized, with all emotions and most illnesses eradicated. Emotions and sexual activity are prohibited, and reproduction occurs through artificial insemination via a conception summons.
Silas, a citizen, works as an illustrator for Atmos. One evening, while returning home, he witnesses two citizens being detained by officials, reminding him of the rumored epidemic of Switched-On Syndrome (SOS), a condition that revives human emotions. Those afflicted with SOS who do not commit suicide progress to stage four and are confined to the Defective Emotional Neuropathy Facility (the DEN), an institution from which no one ever escapes. The next day at work, a colleague commits suicide, and the emotionless staff dispassionately analyze the event. Silas is the only one who notices Nia, a coworker, displaying an emotional reaction. Later, during a team meeting, he again observes Nia exhibiting emotions.
The following day, Silas becomes distracted during a conference at Atmos, frequently falls asleep, and experiences his first nightmare. He undergoes a medical check-up and befriends Jonas, an official with stage 2 SOS. Silas is diagnosed with Stage 1 SOS and prescribed medication. Despite this, his condition deteriorates; his drawings become more emotional, and his interest in Nia intensifies. One day, he follows Nia into the bathroom and consoles her. She confesses that she has been hiding her SOS for over a year to avoid detection and ostracization. On another occasion, while in the bathroom, he kisses her but is interrupted by Leonard, the company manager, who begins conversing with him. Leonard notices Nia’s workstation is still active and reveals he has been monitoring Silas. As a result, Silas decides to transfer to a different department, separating himself from Nia.
