Description: After losing her mother, 17-year-old Mary Katherine, known as M.K., moves in with her eccentric father, Professor Bomba, a scientist obsessed with finding tiny humanoid warriors called Leafmen in Danbury, Connecticut. These warriors protect the nearby forest from evil creatures known as Boggans, led by their malevolent ruler Mandrake. While her father tirelessly searches for proof of his theories, M.K. finds his efforts absurd, much like her late mother did. Bomba, however, remains confident he will uncover the truth.
Meanwhile, Nod, a young and rebellious Leafman, decides to abandon his duties, angering Ronin, the strict leader who promised Nod’s deceased father he would guide him.
In the forest, Queen Tara, the benevolent fairy queen, must select a successor to her throne. Accompanied by her royal guards and a laid-back slug named Mub, she travels to a field of leaf pods. However, the Boggans launch an attack just as she chooses a pod. Despite the efforts of her flying Leafmen guards, Queen Tara is overwhelmed. Ronin arrives to rescue her, and they escape on his hummingbird mount. Yet, during the pursuit, Mandrake and his son Dagda ambush them. Ronin kills Dagda, but not before Dagda fatally wounds Queen Tara.
Meanwhile, M.K., frustrated after an argument with her father, decides to leave. While searching for her father’s dog, Ozzy, in the woods, she encounters Queen Tara. In her dying moments, Tara entrusts M.K. with the pod, using her magic to shrink her. She instructs M.K. to take the pod to Nim Galuu, a glowworm wizard, before passing away. M.K. then joins forces with Ronin, Mub, Grub, and the Leafmen.
Ronin discovers that Nod has entered a race involving creatures and bugs riding birds. Nod had initially agreed to throw the race for Bufo, a short-tempered toad gangster. When Bufo attempts to punish Nod, Ronin intervenes. Nod reluctantly reunites with Ronin and the group after learning of Queen Tara’s death, which Bufo overhears.
