Description: “Enter the Void” (2009) is a film that follows Oscar, a young man living in Tokyo with his sister Linda. Oscar earns a living by dealing drugs, despite warnings from his friend Alex, who encourages him to explore “The Tibetan Book of the Dead,” a Buddhist text about the afterlife. The story begins with Linda heading to her job at a strip club, while Oscar goes about his nightly routine. The narrative unfolds through his perspective, including moments of blinking, internal thoughts, and vivid hallucinations induced by DMT.
Later, Alex meets Oscar, and they head out so Oscar can deliver drugs to his friend Victor. During their journey, Alex explains key concepts from “The Tibetan Book of the Dead,” such as how a deceased person’s spirit may linger among the living before experiencing nightmares and seeking reincarnation. They arrive at a bar named The Void, where Oscar meets Victor. Suddenly, police officers storm in, forcing Oscar to hide in a bathroom stall. As he tries to dispose of his drugs, a police officer shoots him, and he collapses.
From this point, the story shifts to Oscar’s perspective as he observes his life from above. Viewers witness key events: Oscar and Linda’s parents die in a car accident, leaving the siblings separated in foster care; Oscar moves to Tokyo and begins dealing drugs to bring Linda to live with him; he sleeps with Victor’s mother to earn extra money; Linda takes a job as a stripper, much to Oscar’s dismay; Victor discovers Oscar’s affair with his mother; and, finally, Oscar’s tragic death at The Void. The film explores themes of life, death, and reincarnation through a series of non-linear and surreal sequences.
