Description: Enola Holmes is a 2020 mystery film based on the first book in the young adult fiction series of the same name by Nancy Springer. The story follows Enola, the teenage sister of the famous detective Sherlock Holmes. When her mother goes missing, Enola travels to London to find her and embarks on an exciting adventure. Along the way, she teams up with a runaway lord to solve a mystery that could endanger the entire country.
Directed by Harry Bradbeer with a screenplay by Jack Thorne, the film stars Millie Bobby Brown as Enola Holmes, who also serves as a producer. The cast includes Henry Cavill, Sam Claflin, and Helena Bonham Carter. Originally set for a theatrical release by Warner Bros. Pictures, the film was acquired by Netflix due to the COVID-19 pandemic and premiered on September 23, 2020. It received positive reviews, particularly for Brown’s performance, and became one of Netflix’s most-watched original films, with 76 million households viewing it in its first four weeks. A sequel, Enola Holmes 2, is currently in production.
Enola is the youngest member of the Holmes family, known for her intelligence, observational skills, and defiance of societal norms for women in her era. Her mother, Eudoria, taught her chess, jujitsu, and the importance of independence. On her sixteenth birthday, Enola discovers her mother has vanished, leaving behind only a few gifts. A week later, she reunites with her brothers, Sherlock and Mycroft. While Sherlock admires her intellect, Mycroft finds her troublesome and plans to send her to a strict finishing school. Using hidden messages and money left by her mother, Enola escapes, disguises herself as a boy, and begins her journey.
