**Storyline:**
In suburban Chicago, teenagers Jade Butterfield and David Axelrod fall in love after being introduced by Jade’s brother, Keith. The Butterfields are known for their bohemian lifestyle, which allows Jade and David to develop an intense and passionate relationship, including their intimate moments in Jade’s room. While Jade’s family is open-minded, David’s home life is dull; his parents are wealthy liberal activists who show little interest in him.
One night, Jade’s mother, Ann, catches Jade and David together by the fireplace and begins to live vicariously through their romance. However, her husband, Hugh, grows increasingly uneasy about their relationship. Jade’s nightly encounters start to affect her grades and sleep. When she attempts to steal a sleeping pill from her father, Hugh insists David stop seeing Jade until the school term ends. Ann convinces David to agree, warning him not to push Hugh into regrettable actions.
At school, David’s friend Billy recounts a childhood story of accidentally starting a fire and being praised as a hero. Inspired, David sets the Butterfields’ front porch ablaze but loses control of the flames. He manages to save the family from the burning house but is later arrested.
After a trial, David is convicted of second-degree arson, sentenced to five years of probation, and confined to a mental hospital. He is also barred from contacting Jade or her family. Despite this, David writes to her daily, but the letters are withheld due to the no-contact order. His parents secure his early release, angering Hugh. Upon receiving his unsent letters, David realizes why Jade never responded and decides to pursue her, even though it violates his parole.
