Set in Regency-era England, the story follows wealthy and beautiful Emma Woodhouse as she seeks a new companion after her governess, Miss Taylor, marries and becomes Mrs. Weston. During Christmas, Emma’s sister and Mr. Knightley’s younger brother visit. After a dinner with the Westons, Emma finds herself alone in a carriage with Mr. Elton, who confesses his love for her. Emma rejects him, and Mr. Elton disappears for six weeks, later returning with a wife. New members of Emma’s social circle appear: Jane Fairfax, Miss Bates’ niece, and Frank Churchill, Mr. Weston’s son from his first marriage. Emma becomes jealous of Jane but is captivated by Frank.
At a ball hosted by the Westons, Mr. Elton humiliates Harriet by refusing to dance with her. Mr. Knightley steps in, dancing with Harriet and later with Emma, sparking romantic feelings between them. Frank rescues Harriet from an encounter with Romanichal Travellers, leading Emma to believe Harriet has fallen for Frank.
