Description: The 2022 film “Elvis” tells the story of the legendary musician’s rise to fame, as seen through the eyes of his former manager, Colonel Tom Parker, who reflects on their journey from his deathbed in 1997. Elvis Presley, born into poverty, finds solace in music despite being mocked for his passion for African American music from Memphis’ Beale Street. Parker, a shrewd carnival promoter, recognizes Elvis’ potential after hearing him on the radio and persuades him to take control of his career, leading to a rapid rise to stardom.
However, Elvis faces backlash from conservative parents and politicians who accuse his music of corrupting youth. A violent incident at a concert puts him at risk of legal trouble, but Parker allegedly arranges for Elvis to join the U.S. Army to avoid further issues. During his service, Elvis learns of his mother Gladys’ death from alcoholism. While stationed in Germany, he meets Priscilla Beaulieu, who becomes a significant part of his life.
After his discharge, Elvis resumes his career, but Parker’s control over him tightens. Troubled by the assassinations of Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert Kennedy, Elvis desires to use his music for political expression, while Parker pushes him toward commercial success. The film explores the complexities of Elvis’ life, his struggles with fame, and the influence of those around him.
