The film tells the story of Florence Carala and Julien Tavernier, two lovers who conspire to murder Florence’s husband, Simon Carala, a wealthy French industrialist and Julien’s employer. On a Saturday evening, Julien, a former Foreign Legion parachutist and veteran of the Indochinese and Algerian wars, stays late at the office to carry out the plan. Using a rope, he climbs the building to Simon’s office and shoots him with Simon’s own gun, staging the scene to look like a suicide. Afterward, Julien returns to his office and leaves the building with a secretary and a security guard, establishing his alibi. However, as he gets into his car, he realizes he left the rope hanging from the building. He rushes back inside, but the security guard shuts off the power and locks up, trapping Julien in the elevator.
Meanwhile, Julien’s car is stolen by Louis, a petty criminal, and his girlfriend Véronique, a flower shop assistant. Florence, waiting at a nearby café, sees the car drive by with Véronique leaning out the window. Assuming Julien has abandoned their plan, Florence spends the night wandering the streets of Paris, desperately searching for him.
Louis and Véronique drive around aimlessly before encountering a group of Germans in a Mercedes. After a spontaneous race, they end up at a motel, where a series of events unfold, including the discovery of Julien’s revolver and camera. The film intricately weaves together these parallel storylines, creating a tense and atmospheric narrative set against the backdrop of 1950s Paris.
