Description: “Ek Phaali Rodh” (translated as *A Ray of Light*) is a 2014 Bengali film directed by Atanu Ghosh and produced by Bitan Roy and Antara Ghosh under Teamwork Communication. The film’s music is composed by Joy Sarkar, and it marks Ghosh’s fourth feature film following *Angshumaner Chhobi*, *Takhan Teish*, and *Rupkatha Noy*.
The story revolves around Dr. Somshankar Roy, a social scientist, who enlists the help of two young individuals, Swagato and Anwesha, to stage mock crises in public spaces. The objective is to observe people’s reactions to various forms of crisis and analyze human behavior to draw conclusions. Anwesha, a sociology postgraduate from an affluent family, is engaged to Joy, a renowned singer. On the other hand, Swagato, hailing from a middle-class background with a journalism diploma, struggles to secure stable employment. He is in a committed relationship with Rupa, whose mother, the sole breadwinner of their family, is recently diagnosed with cancer, plunging them into financial turmoil.
Pratim Guha, a blind writer known for his romantic stories, becomes intrigued by Dr. Roy’s experiment and joins the project, seeking inspiration for his next plot. Pratim is a charismatic and independent individual, yet deeply romantic and emotional. His involvement adds complexity to the dynamic relationships among Somshankar, Anwesha, Swagato, Joy, Rupa, and himself.
As the experiment progresses, the boundaries between staged and real crises blur when one of them mysteriously disappears. The group is left in disarray, unable to determine whether the crisis at hand is part of the experiment or a genuine threat. The film explores themes of human behavior, relationships, and the unpredictability of life.
