**Story:**
An elderly woman recounts to her granddaughter the tale of a young man named Edward, who has scissor blades for hands. Created by an inventor, Edward is almost complete as a humanoid. The inventor homeschools Edward but dies from a heart attack before giving him real hands, leaving him “unfinished.” Years later, Peg Boggs, a local Avon saleswoman, visits the Gothic mansion where Edward lives and invites him to her home after realizing he is harmless.
Edward is introduced to Peg’s family: her husband Bill, their young son Kevin, and teenage daughter Kim. Despite Kim’s initial fear, Edward develops feelings for her. The neighborhood, fascinated by Edward, welcomes him at a barbecue hosted by the Boggs family. While most neighbors befriend him, religious fanatic Esmeralda and Kim’s boyfriend Jim remain distrustful.
Edward repays the community’s kindness by trimming hedges into topiaries and grooming dogs, eventually styling the hair of neighborhood women. One neighbor, Joyce, offers to help him open a salon but falsely accuses him of misconduct, damaging his reputation. Edward’s lack of background and financial history leads to a denied loan.
Jim, jealous of Kim’s interest in Edward, manipulates him into breaking into his parents’ house. When the alarm goes off, Jim flees, and Edward is arrested. The police conclude that Edward’s isolation has left him without a sense of reality or common sense.
