Description: In 1973, following extensive medical treatment for walking difficulties, ten-year-old Michael Edwards dreams of Olympic success. Despite practicing various Olympic events and failing repeatedly, his mother supports his ambitions, while his father discourages him. As a teenager, Michael abandons his dream of competing in the Summer Games and turns to skiing, aiming for the Winter Games. Although he excels in the sport, British Olympic officials reject him for lacking refinement. Realizing he could qualify as a ski jumper—a sport Britain hadn’t participated in for decades—he moves to a training facility in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, West Germany. There, he faces ridicule from seasoned jumpers, particularly the Norwegian team.
Determined, Eddie trains himself, initially succeeding on a 15-meter hill but injuring himself on a 40-meter slope. Bronson Peary, a former champion ski jumper turned alcoholic snow groomer, initially advises Eddie to quit. However, Eddie’s persistence and their shared sense of being outsiders convince Bronson to become his coach. With limited time to qualify for the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, Alberta, the duo employs unconventional training methods, enabling Eddie to master the 40-meter jump.
To secure a spot on the British Olympic ski jumping team, Eddie needs to complete a 70-meter jump. Despite landing a 34-meter jump, officials raise the qualification standard to 61 meters, aiming to exclude him due to his amateur status. Undeterred, Eddie continues training, improving his jumps and proving his resilience on the circuit. His journey is a testament to determination and the spirit of overcoming adversity.
