Description: The 2021 live-action adaptation of *Dynasty Warriors* is based on the popular video game series from Koei Tecmo. The project was announced on March 15, 2016, by producer Suzuki Akihiro and HMV Digital China during the 20th Hong Kong International Film and TV Market. Directed by Roy Chow, with Christine To as producer and writer, the film was initially slated for a 2017 release.
Filming began on July 11, 2017, after HMV Digital China’s executive chairman, Stephen Shiu Jr., confirmed the start date on his Weibo account. Shiu had secured the rights to adapt the franchise four years prior. The cast includes notable actors such as Han Geng, Wang Kai, Louis Koo, Tony Yang, and Gulnazar.
The production faced challenges, including an eye injury sustained by Louis Koo during filming in mainland China. Despite his insistence on continuing, director Roy Chow ensured Koo received medical treatment in Hong Kong. After recovering, Koo rejoined the team in New Zealand, where background scenes were shot in November 2017.
Principal photography wrapped on November 28, 2017, following an extensive pre-production phase of eight months and a five-month shoot. Post-production was expected to take up to a year. A teaser trailer was released on March 19, 2018, with the film initially planned for a 2019 release.
In March 2021, a new trailer announced release dates for April 29 in Hong Kong and April 30 in mainland China. Netflix acquired the global distribution rights for a record-breaking eight-figure sum, marking a milestone for Chinese-language films. The movie became available for streaming on July 1, 2021.
