Description: “Dutta Vs Dutta” (2012) is a Bengali film that takes viewers back to a transformative era in the city’s history, marked by the arrival of hippies, the rise of the Naxalite movement, and the emergence of a groundbreaking Bangla rock band that redefined the music landscape. The story is narrated through the perspective of Rono, the youngest male member of the Dutta family.
After being forced to leave his boarding school in Darjeeling due to unpaid fees, 17-year-old Rono (played by Ranodeep Bose) struggles to adapt to his new life at home. The city, his school, and his family dynamics feel overwhelming as he grapples with the pressure to choose a career path while secretly yearning to pursue acting.
The Dutta household is filled with tension and turmoil. Rono’s father (Anjan Dutt) and uncle (Biswajit Chakraborty) constantly feud over the ancestral property, while his mother (Rita Kayral) turns to alcohol to escape her struggles. Rono’s grandfather (Dipankar De) finds solace in music, and his mentally challenged uncle (Subhasish Mukhopadhyay) adds another layer of complexity to the family. Meanwhile, Rono’s rebellious elder sister, China (Arpita Chatterjee), shocks everyone by first declaring her love for a man of her father’s age, Ghenti Kaku (Shankar Chakraborty), and later marrying a Naxalite (Kaushik Sen).
Amidst this chaos, Rono finds guidance and inspiration in an extraordinary character played by Srijit Mukherji, a poet and musician who believes in challenging the conventional mindset of middle-class Bengalis. Through his encouragement, Rono learns to express his feelings to the girl he loves.
The film subtly pays tribute to the legendary Goutam Chattopadhyay and his iconic band, Mohiner Ghoraguli, through Srijit’s character, adding depth and nostalgia to the narrative. “Dutta Vs Dutta” captures the essence of a pivotal time in history while exploring themes of family, identity, and self-discovery.
