**Storyline:**
The story begins with a young girl named Fei Fei who is told the tale of the moon goddess. The goddess consumed an elixir for immortality and now waits on the moon with only her companion, the Jade Rabbit (“On the Moon Above”). As the annual Moon Festival approaches, Fei Fei and her family prepare by making mooncakes for the village (“Mooncakes”). However, Fei Fei’s mother becomes ill and gifts her daughter a bunny named Bungee before passing away, leaving the family in mourning.
Four years later, Fei Fei has grown into a bright and scientifically-minded teenager. She continues to help in her family’s shop and still holds onto her belief in the moon goddess, Chang’e. Her world is shaken when she discovers her father is seeing a new woman, Mrs. Zhong, and becomes annoyed by Mrs. Zhong’s lively son, Chin. Determined to prove Chang’e’s existence, Fei Fei builds a rocket shaped like a Chinese paper lantern, resembling a rabbit, using fireworks for propulsion. Her plan takes an unexpected turn when Chin sneaks aboard, and the rocket begins to crash. However, a mystical energy beam captures the rocket and transports them to the moon.
After crash-landing, they encounter playful spirits who guide them to a magical realm. They are introduced to Chang’e, who appears as a pop star, and her backup dancers, the Lunettes, performing a concert for the inhabitants of Luminaria (“Ultraluminary”). Throughout their adventure, Fei Fei struggles with her emotions about her father’s engagement to Mrs. Zhong and finds solace in memories of her mother. Inspired by a crane and the legend of Chang’e, Fei Fei ultimately builds a rocket to the moon, seeking to prove the moon goddess’s existence (“Rocket to the Moon”). The story concludes with Fei Fei’s family celebrating the Moon Festival together.
