Edgin Darvis, once a loyal member of the Harpers, turns to a life of theft after his wife is killed by a Red Wizard he encountered during a mission. Alongside his companion, the barbarian Holga Kilgore, Edgin seeks to build a better life for himself and his daughter, Kira. He forms a team with Simon Aumar, an inexperienced sorcerer, and Forge Fitzwilliam, a cunning rogue.
During one of their missions, they infiltrate a former Harper stronghold to steal a resurrection tablet that could bring Edgin’s wife back to life. However, Forge’s ally, Sofina—a Red Wizard in disguise—exploits the situation to steal something else. While Simon and Forge manage to escape, Edgin and Holga are captured.
Two years later, Edgin and Holga break free from prison and discover that Forge has taken guardianship of Kira and risen to power as the Lord of Neverwinter. Forge has been spreading lies, claiming Edgin was imprisoned for greed rather than his noble intentions to retrieve the resurrection tablet for Kira’s mother. When Forge tries to have Edgin and Holga executed, the duo escapes and vows to expose the truth.
To reclaim the resurrection tablet as proof of Forge’s deceit, Edgin and Holga assemble a new team. They reconnect with Simon, who recommends Doric, a skilled tiefling druid, to join their ranks. Doric’s ability to shapeshift into animals helps the group assess the defenses around Forge’s vault. However, Simon admits he lacks the power to bypass the complex enchantments protecting it.
Recalling a powerful relic from her people’s history, Holga guides the group to an ancient graveyard. There, Simon uses a talisman to communicate with the dead, hoping to uncover a solution that will enable them to succeed in their mission.
