**Storyline:**
In 1919, Holt Farrier, a former equestrian performer and World War I amputee, returns to the Medici Brothers’ Circus, now struggling financially. The circus’s owner, Max Medici, informs Holt that he sold their horses after Holt’s wife, Annie, died during the Spanish flu outbreak. Holt is tasked with caring for the circus’s pregnant elephant, Mrs. Jumbo.
When Mrs. Jumbo gives birth to a calf with unusually large ears, Medici orders Holt to hide the deformity to avoid public ridicule. However, during the calf’s debut performance in Joplin, Missouri, the audience mocks him, dubbing him “Dumbo” and pelting him with peanuts. Mrs. Jumbo, enraged by her son’s mistreatment, goes on a rampage, causing significant damage and accidentally killing a handler. Medici is forced to sell Mrs. Jumbo to prevent further backlash.
Holt’s children, Joe and Milly, comfort Dumbo and discover his ability to fly by flapping his ears. They also find that Dumbo is motivated to fly when holding a feather. Dumbo is later cast as a firefighter clown, but the act goes wrong, leaving him trapped on a high platform surrounded by flames. Milly gives him a feather, enabling him to fly to safety and stunning the audience.
As Dumbo’s talent gains attention, V. A. Vandevere, the wealthy owner of Dreamland amusement park in New York City, proposes a partnership with Medici. This collaboration secures the circus’s financial future, ensuring their performances at Dreamland.
