**Plot Summary:**
Lloyd Christmas and Harry Dunne, two well-meaning but simple-minded friends, share an apartment in Providence, Rhode Island. Lloyd, a limo driver with a chipped tooth, instantly falls for Mary Swanson, a passenger he drives to the airport. Unaware of the situation, Mary accidentally leaves a briefcase behind, which Lloyd retrieves with the intention of returning it to her. What Lloyd doesn’t realize is that the briefcase contains ransom money meant for Mary’s kidnapped husband, Bobby, and it was supposed to be handed over to his captors, Joe “Mental” Mentalino and J. P. Shay.
After being fired from his job, Lloyd returns home to find that Harry has also been let go from his dog-grooming job due to a series of mishaps. Meanwhile, Mental and Shay track Lloyd to his apartment, searching for the briefcase. Mistaking them for debt collectors, Lloyd and Harry flee but later return to discover their apartment ransacked and Harry’s parakeet beheaded. Lloyd convinces Harry to travel to Aspen to find Mary and return the briefcase, hoping she can help them improve their social standing.
On their journey, the duo encounters Mental and Shay at a motel. In a twist of events, they unintentionally cause Mental’s death by poisoning him with rat poison. As they continue their journey, Lloyd takes a wrong turn, leading them through Nebraska instead of Colorado, while the police await their arrival on the road to Aspen.
