Storyline:
Peter Highman (Robert Downey Jr.), a successful architect, is on his way home from Atlanta to Los Angeles to be with his wife, Sarah (Michelle Monaghan), who is about to give birth. On his way to the airport, he crosses paths with Ethan Tremblay (Zach Galifianakis), who is traveling to Los Angeles to pursue acting and plans to scatter his late father’s ashes at the Grand Canyon. During a conversation, Ethan carelessly uses the words “terrorist” and “bomb,” resulting in both being removed from the plane. Stranded and added to the No Fly List, Peter, who also loses his wallet, reluctantly agrees to join Ethan on a road trip to Los Angeles.
Their journey takes a turn when Ethan stops to purchase marijuana, leaving them nearly out of funds. Without identification, Peter arranges for his wife to wire money to Ethan, but discovers the money was sent to Ethan’s stage name instead of his legal name. This leads to a heated confrontation with a Western Union employee (Danny McBride).
After a night at a rest stop, Peter attempts to leave Ethan behind but realizes he forgot to unload Ethan’s father’s ashes. Wrestling with guilt, he returns and lies about going out for breakfast. Ethan takes over driving, but he falls asleep at the wheel, causing a crash. Peter calls his friend Darryl (Jamie Foxx) for help and considers parting ways with Ethan, but Darryl convinces him otherwise. During their stay at Darryl’s house, Ethan accidentally hints that Sarah might have been unfaithful, causing Peter to question the timing of her pregnancy. Darryl eventually throws them out after mistakenly consuming some of Ethan’s father’s ashes, which were stored in a coffee tin.
