Storyline:
An unnamed Driver works as a mechanic, stunt double, and getaway driver for criminals in Los Angeles, California. His jobs are managed by Shannon, an auto shop owner, who convinces Bernie Rose and Nino, Jewish mobsters, to fund a car for the Driver to race. The Driver forms a bond with Irene, his neighbor, and her young son, Benicio. However, their connection is disrupted when Irene’s husband, Standard Gabriel, is released from prison. Standard, owing protection money from his incarceration, is forced by Albanian gangster Cook to rob a pawnshop for $40,000 to settle his debt. Cook threatens Irene and Benicio by giving the boy a bullet, symbolizing their danger. Upon discovering this, the Driver volunteers to be the getaway driver for the robbery.
While waiting outside the pawnshop with Blanche, Cook’s accomplice, the store owner kills Standard. The Driver and Blanche are chased by another car and take refuge in a motel. There, the Driver learns the pawnshop owner claims Standard acted alone and no money was stolen. When Blanche lies about the pursuit, the Driver confronts her, and she admits the bag contains a million dollars. Blanche and Cook had planned to steal the money using the chasing car. Blanche is later killed by one of Cook’s henchmen in the motel, and the Driver eliminates the attackers.
Back at the auto shop, Shannon offers to hide the money, but the Driver refuses. He tracks down Cook at a strip club, threatens him, and forces him to swallow the bullet he had given to Benicio. Cook reveals Nino orchestrated the robbery. When the Driver contacts Nino with the money, Nino rejects the offer and sends a hitman to the Driver’s apartment.
