Description: In 1930s Texas, Eugene Evans grows up in a small town with his family. The region suffers from severe drought and frequent dust storms. At the age of five, Eugene’s father abandons the family, leaving his mother to remarry a lawman named George Evans, who tries to fill the father’s role for Eugene and his younger sister, Phoebe. Eugene spends most of his time stealing dime novels with his friend Joe, dreaming of a different life.
One day, a town meeting reveals a wanted poster for Allison Wells, a fugitive with a $10,000 reward for bank robbery and murder. Intrigued, Eugene and Joe plan to search for her. Meanwhile, George urges Eugene to take responsibility and find work. Later, Eugene discovers Allison hiding in the barn after she points a gun at him. Recognizing her from the wanted poster, the two strike a deal: Eugene will care for her wounds in exchange for her story.
Allison explains that during a bank robbery, police opened fire into a crowd, accidentally killing a young girl. Shocked by the tragedy, she was shot in the leg while fleeing. To gain Eugene’s trust, she hands him the gun and promises him $20,000 if he helps her escape to Mexico. Eugene agrees.
Phoebe becomes suspicious when she catches Eugene spying on Allison in the barn. He claims he’s looking at dead dogs, but when Phoebe enters, Allison hides in fear. Startled by a loud noise, Phoebe runs out. Eugene then approaches Joe, asking to borrow his family’s car to fulfill Allison’s request, but Joe refuses.
Later, Eugene finds Allison restless and anxious in the barn. To ease her tension, he takes her swimming at a local watering hole. They narrowly avoid being caught by the property owner and run back to the farm naked.
