Description: In the 9th century in northern Britain, a druid circle predicts the arrival of a “falling star” from the Draco constellation. Brude, one of the druids, summons a Pict clan known as the “Painted tribe” to massacre the druids and provoke war against the southern kingdoms near Hadrian’s Wall. A druid apprentice named Lorne escapes the slaughter.
On the southern side of the wall, Gareth and a group of squires undergo final tests to prove their worth for knighthood. Although Gareth excels in combat, he fails to collect sufficient money from peasants. His superior, Sir Horsa, denies him knighthood and demands 100 crowns before reconsidering. Gareth takes shelter with a peasant couple who couldn’t pay him. That night, a meteor crashes north of the wall. Gareth, hearing it may contain riches, steals a sword and ventures beyond the wall to find it.
Gareth discovers the meteor, which bursts open to reveal a dragon and nine eggs. The dragon attacks the Painted tribe members who followed the meteor, and Gareth saves one of the dragon’s eggs despite being severely wounded. Impressed by Gareth’s compassion, the dragon shares its heart, saving Gareth’s life. However, Brude casts the Sorcerer’s Curse, enslaving the dragon, rendering it powerless in daylight or flame, and ensuring it will fall under Brude’s control by the full moon.
Lorne rescues Gareth, explaining the bond he now shares with the dragon. Gareth is introduced to Rhonu, a rebel leader, and clans opposing Brude, who hope Gareth can persuade the dragon to fight for their cause.
