**Storyline:**
In Hong Kong, Bruce Lee’s father, Lee Hoi-chuen, wakes from a nightmare about a phantom, referred to as the Demon, that haunts his young son. Concerned, he enrolls Bruce in Chinese martial arts training under the guidance of instructor Yip Man. As a young adult, Bruce defends a Chinese woman from harassment by British sailors, leading to his departure from Hong Kong. His father insists he move to the United States.
In the US, Bruce starts working as a dishwasher in a Chinese restaurant. After a brawl with the cooks, he is fired but is given financial assistance by the owner, who encourages him to pursue higher education. While studying philosophy in college, Bruce begins teaching martial arts classes, where he meets Linda, an American woman. Despite opposition from Linda’s racist mother, Vivian, the couple marries. Linda suggests Bruce open a martial arts school, but his Chinese peers insist he train only Chinese students. When Bruce refuses, they challenge him to a fight. He defeats a challenger named Johnny Sun in a secret match, but Johnny attacks Bruce after admitting defeat, leaving Bruce with a severe back injury.
During his recovery, with Linda’s support, Bruce writes the martial arts book *Tao of Jeet Kune Do*. The couple welcomes their first child, Brandon, and reconcile with Vivian. Months later, at a martial arts tournament organized by Ed Parker, Johnny challenges Bruce to a rematch. Bruce defeats Johnny decisively, earning the audience’s respect, though Johnny is left crippled. After the match, Bill Krieger, who later becomes Bruce’s manager, offers him the role of Kato in the TV series *The Green Hornet*. Bruce and Krieger also conceptualize the TV series *Kung Fu*, with Bruce set to play the lead role.
