Description: In 1927, the Crawley family learns that King George V and Queen Mary will visit Downton Abbey during their royal tour of Yorkshire. The news excites both the family and the staff. As preparations begin, Lady Mary believes Barrow is not capable of managing such a significant event and brings Carson out of retirement to assist, much to Barrow’s frustration. Shortly after, the royal staff arrives at Downton ahead of the King and Queen. While the King’s valet, Richard Ellis, treats the Downton staff kindly, the rest of the royal entourage behaves arrogantly, making it clear they intend to take over the household duties during the visit.
Lord and Lady Hexham arrive the day before the royal visit. That evening, chairs for the parade seating are delivered during heavy rain, and Lady Mary leads a chaotic effort to set them up. The next day, the weather improves, and the King and Queen arrive at Downton, where they are introduced to the Crawley family. Violet exchanges tense pleasantries with Maud, the Queen’s lady-in-waiting and Robert’s distant cousin, while Tom meets Maud’s maid, Lucy Smith. Violet resents Maud for planning to leave her estate to Lucy instead of Robert.
Meanwhile, in the village, Tom meets a man calling himself Major Chetwode, whom he initially believes is overseeing security for the royal visit. Later, during the parade, Chetwode attempts to assassinate the King but is stopped by Tom and Lady Mary, who disarms him. After the parade, Tom encounters a weeping woman on the lawn, unaware she is Princess Mary. She confides in him about her troubled marriage, and Tom inspires her to reconcile with her husband.
