Description: “Don’t Look Up,” released in 2021, is a satirical science fiction black comedy film written, produced, and directed by Adam McKay. The movie features Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence as two low-level astronomers who embark on a media campaign to alert humanity about an impending comet that threatens to destroy Earth. The star-studded cast includes Rob Morgan, Jonah Hill, Mark Rylance, Tyler Perry, Ron Perlman, Timothée Chalamet, Ariana Grande, Scott Mescudi, Himesh Patel, Melanie Lynskey, Cate Blanchett, and Meryl Streep. The film serves as an allegory for societal indifference to pressing global issues, particularly climate change. Ariana Grande and Scott Mescudi also contributed to the soundtrack with the song “Just Look Up.”
Produced by Hyperobject Industries and Bluegrass Films, the project was announced in November 2019 and later acquired by Netflix after initially being developed by Paramount Pictures. Jennifer Lawrence was the first to join the cast, followed by Leonardo DiCaprio after script revisions. Filming, initially scheduled for April 2020 in Massachusetts, was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and eventually took place from November 2020 to February 2021. The film premiered in theaters on December 10, 2021, before its Netflix release on December 24, 2021.
Despite mixed reviews from critics, who praised the cast but critiqued McKay’s heavy-handed approach, the film earned recognition as one of the top 10 films of 2021 by the National Board of Review and the American Film Institute. It also received several accolades, including four nominations at the 79th Golden Globe Awards and six at the 27th Critics’ Choice Awards.
The story follows Kate Dibiasky, an astronomy student at Michigan State University, who discovers a comet on a collision course with Earth. Alongside her professor, Dr. Randall Mindy, and scholar Teddy Oglethorpe, she attempts to warn the public. However, their efforts are met with indifference from President Janie Orlean and her administration, as well as the media. Despite their struggles, Kate’s emotional outburst during a TV interview goes viral, highlighting the film’s critique of societal apathy in the face of existential threats.
