Description: “Djibouti,” a 2021 Indian Malayalam-language action thriller, marks the directorial debut of S. J. Sinu. Starring Amith Chakalakkal, Shagun Jaswal, Dileesh Pothan, Jacob Gregory, Biju Sopanam, and Anjali Nair, the film was produced by Jobi P. Sam under Blue Hill Nael Communications and Nile & Blue Hill Motion Pictures. Released in theaters on December 31, 2021, the story revolves around Hannah, a young woman from Djibouti, who visits Kerala and befriends Loui and Aby from Idukki. She secures jobs for them in Djibouti, but their journey takes a dramatic turn as they face challenges and plan their escape back home.
The film’s production began in January 2020, with the first schedule shot in Idukki, Kerala, in February. A team of 75 members then traveled to Djibouti for the second schedule in March 2020. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns, the crew continued filming in Tadjoura, an area with minimal pandemic risks. Djibouti was the only Malayalam film in production at the time, as other shoots were halted due to the pandemic. After completing the second schedule in April 2020, the crew faced travel restrictions and stayed in a villa complex until they were repatriated to Kerala on June 5, 2020, with help from the Indian Embassy and the producer. A planned schedule in China was canceled, and filming concluded in 2020.
The film’s teaser was unveiled by Djibouti’s Prime Minister, Abdoulkader Kamil Mohamed, on March 25, 2021, followed by a music launch in Kochi in April 2021. The trailer was released in August 2021 by prominent actors Prithviraj Sukumaran, Dulquer Salman, Jayasurya, and Fahad Fasil via their social media platforms.
