Description: In 1982, a massive alien spacecraft appears and hovers above Johannesburg, South Africa. Investigators discover over a million malnourished aliens, referred to as “Prawns,” inside the ship. The South African government relocates them to a camp named District 9, which eventually deteriorates into a slum. Over time, locals begin to resent the aliens, viewing them as dirty, lawless, and a drain on resources.
Tensions rise between the aliens and humans, prompting the government to hire Multinational United (MNU), a major weapons manufacturer, to move the aliens to a new camp outside the city. Wikus van de Merwe, an MNU employee and son-in-law of executive Piet Smit, is assigned to lead the relocation. Meanwhile, three aliens—Christopher Johnson, his son CJ, and friend Paul—are secretly working to synthesize alien fuel in District 9. They finally complete their task, but during the relocation, Wikus discovers their hidden fuel container. Accidentally spraying some of it on his face, Wikus begins to mutate into a Prawn.
As Wikus’s transformation progresses, he is captured by MNU, who experiment on him to exploit his newfound ability to use alien weaponry. Realizing the danger, Wikus escapes and becomes a fugitive. A smear campaign spreads misinformation, claiming he is a criminal who contracted a disease from interacting with the aliens. Pursued by MNU forces, Wikus must navigate a dangerous world while his humanity rapidly fades.
