The story begins as the Heffley family attends a back-to-school roller skating party. Greg, who is about to start seventh grade, reconnects with his friend Rowley Jefferson and meets a new girl named Holly Hills, who captures his attention. Rodrick also tricks their parents, Susan and Frank, into embarrassing Greg over the rink’s PA system and carrying him off the floor. However, during a church service, the brothers get into a fight over a chocolate stain on Greg’s pants caused by Rodrick, resulting in both being grounded and missing a family trip to a water park. The next morning, the brothers receive unexpected news that their parents are returning early. Greg comes up with the idea to replace the door with one from the basement. However, after the family arrives home, they realize the new door doesn’t have a lock.
