**Storyline:**
Greg Heffley, an 11-year-old boy, feels nervous about starting middle school. On his first day, he quickly experiences the challenges, like missing stall doors in the boys’ bathroom and struggling to find a seat during lunch. During P.E. class, Greg and his best friend Rowley Jefferson escape a game of Gladiator and learn about the “Cheese Touch,” a moldy piece of cheese on the basketball court that turns anyone who touches it into an outcast. The only way to get rid of it is to pass it on to someone else. They also meet Angie Steadman, a seventh-grader who avoids others to “survive.” Greg decides his goal is to become the most popular student in school.
The next day, Greg tries wrestling but faces humiliating losses against Fregley, an eccentric outcast, and his former rival Patty Farrell, leading him to quit. On Halloween, Greg and Rowley encounter a group of teenage boys who chase them after spraying them with a fire extinguisher. The two manage to escape after damaging the boys’ truck.
Greg and Rowley join the Safety Patrol and enter a contest to become the school paper’s new cartoonist. Greg accidentally breaks Rowley’s arm, making Rowley popular while Greg grows envious, especially when Rowley wins the contest. During a Safety Patrol assignment, Greg panics after spotting a truck similar to the one from Halloween and abandons a group of kindergartners, fleeing the scene.
