Description: In 1950, Lieutenant Tom Hudner joins Fighter Squadron 32 (VF-32) at Quonset Point Naval Air Station, where he meets Ensign Jesse Brown, the unit’s only African American pilot. The squadron trains with F4U-4 Corsairs, aircraft known for their power but also for being dangerous if mishandled. Hudner befriends Brown after offering him rides when his car breaks down, eventually meeting his wife, Daisy, and their young daughter, Pam. Despite their struggles with racist neighbors, the Browns persevere, with Jesse using self-motivation techniques before missions.
After successfully completing carrier tests, VF-32 deploys to the Mediterranean Sea aboard the USS Leyte to counter Soviet threats. Daisy asks Hudner to look out for Jesse, a promise he takes seriously. Tragedy strikes when squadron member Mohring dies in a crash during a landing attempt. Brown explains to Hudner that rigidly following orders isn’t always the solution, as he himself faced countless racist superiors who wanted him to fail.
During shore leave in Cannes, France, Brown impresses the squadron by securing invitations to a casino after meeting actress Elizabeth Taylor. Hudner gets into a fight with a Marine who had previously harassed Brown, but Brown insists Hudner doesn’t need to fight his battles—just be there for him. Brown receives a watch from the USS Leyte’s black crewmen, who admire his achievements. Soon after, the squadron learns of the outbreak of the Korean War and prepares to redeploy in support of South Korea.
