Description: In July 1967, the Detroit Police Department conducted a raid on an unlicensed club during a celebration for black veterans returning from the Vietnam War. The arrest of suspects sparked unrest, with crowds throwing rocks at officers, looting stores, and setting fires, marking the start of the 12th Street Riot. As chaos escalated, Governor George W. Romney deployed the Michigan Army National Guard, and President Lyndon B. Johnson sent Army paratroopers to assist in restoring order. During the riots, officer Philip Krauss killed a fleeing looter with a shotgun, defying orders, yet he remained on duty pending a decision on murder charges.
Meanwhile, The Dramatics, a black R&B group, arrived in Detroit hoping to secure a recording contract. However, their performance was canceled due to the unrest. As they attempted to leave, their bus was attacked by rioters, leading the group to split up. Lead singer Larry Reed and his bodyguard Fred Temple sought refuge at the Algiers Motel, where they met two white girls, Julie Ann Hysell and Karen Malloy, and their friends Carl Cooper, Aubrey Pollard Jr., Michael Clark, and Lee Forsythe. Cooper’s prank with a starter pistol caused tension, prompting the girls to retreat to another room, while Reed and Temple stayed in their own.
Melvin Dismukes, a private security guard, was tasked with protecting a grocery store from looters and tried to establish rapport with the Guardsmen.
