**Plot Summary:**
In 1782, sixteen years after Jeongjo ascended the throne of Joseon, a series of mysterious murders unfolds. King Jeongjo suspects the killings are part of a conspiracy orchestrated by government officials to conceal illegal tributary payments. To uncover the truth, the king secretly assigns Detective K, played by Kim Myung-min, to investigate the case.
During his investigation, Detective K interrogates the imprisoned city governor, only to discover that the governor has been murdered. The weapon used is a long metal needle embedded in the governor’s skull. Nearby, Detective K finds remnants of the Wolfsbane flower, a clue pointing to the killer’s identity. However, before he can act, prison guards arrive and mistake Detective K for the murderer, leading to his imprisonment.
While in jail, Detective K encounters Seo-pil, a quirky dog enthusiast portrayed by Oh Dal-su, who helps him escape. Following this incident, King Jeongjo demotes Detective K and reassigns him to Jeokseong under the pretext of investigating a widow’s suspected suicide. However, the real motive is for Detective K to explore Jeokseong, the region where the Wolfsbane flower grows.
In Jeokseong, Detective K and Seo-pil cross paths with Han Kaek-ju, a powerful commission agent controlling merchant groups, played by Han Ji-min. They suspect Han Kaek-ju and Minister Im, head of the Noron political party, portrayed by Lee Jae-yong, of embezzling taxes to bribe politicians. Meanwhile, Detective K delves into the widow’s suicide case, eventually uncovering a connection between the two investigations.
The film weaves a gripping tale of intrigue, corruption, and mystery as Detective K unravels the truth behind the killings and the widow’s tragic fate.
