**Storyline:**
In May 1998, teenage amateur astronomer Leo Beiderman spots an unidentified object in the night sky during a star party. He sends a photo to astronomer Dr. Marcus Wolf, who identifies it as a comet heading toward Earth. Sadly, Wolf dies in a car accident while rushing to alert authorities.
A year later, journalist Jenny Lerner investigates Treasury Secretary Alan Rittenhouse, suspecting a scandal involving someone named “Ellie.” She is soon taken into custody by the FBI and brought to President Tom Beck, who convinces her to withhold the story for 48 hours in exchange for a key role in an upcoming press conference. Jenny later discovers that “Ellie” is an acronym for “Extinction-Level Event” (ELE). Two days later, President Beck announces that the comet, named Wolf–Beiderman, is on a collision course with Earth and could lead to humanity’s extinction. He reveals that the U.S. and Russia have been secretly building a spacecraft called *Messiah* to intercept and redirect the comet using nuclear explosives.
The *Messiah* is launched with a crew of five American astronauts and one Russian cosmonaut. They successfully land on the comet, drill into its surface, and plant the nuclear bombs. However, the mission takes longer than expected, and as the comet rotates into sunlight, one astronaut is blinded and another is thrown into space by a sudden gas eruption. The remaining crew manages to escape and detonate the bombs.
Instead of deflecting the comet, the explosion splits it into two pieces, now named Wolf (the larger fragment) and Beiderman (the smaller one). Both fragments remain on a collision course with Earth. President Beck publicly declares the mission a failure. Martial law is imposed, and a lottery system is implemented to select 800,000 Americans to join 200,000 pre-selected individuals in underground shelters for survival.
