Description: “Deep” is a Thai Netflix Original psychological sci-fi thriller released in 2021, marking it as the second Thai Original film on the platform that year. Initially, there were high expectations for a unique and innovative concept, especially given its Thai production. There is indeed a growing trend of Thai films and directors gaining cult and indie recognition. However, the storyline of this film feels quite familiar, seemingly crafted to appeal to a broader audience.
One notable aspect is that the film features English dubbing instead of subtitles, which may detract from the authenticity of the actors’ performances. Personally, I find dubbed voices distracting and believe they fail to convey the full emotional depth intended by the actors. Subtitles would have been a better choice in this regard.
The plot revolves around four university students suffering from insomnia, who are drawn into a neuroscience experiment that quickly spirals out of control. Trapped within their own minds, they must find a way to escape before it’s too late. The premise can be likened to a reverse “Inception,” with the key instruction being to avoid falling asleep at all costs. While the concept is intriguing, the execution leaves room for improvement.
