Description: The 2017 film *Death Note* follows the story of Light Turner, a high school student in Seattle, Washington, who discovers a mysterious leather-bound notebook called the “Death Note.” The notebook contains instructions stating that anyone whose name is written in it will die as described. Light encounters Ryuk, the supernatural being and owner of the notebook, who convinces him to use its power. After experimenting by writing down the name of a bully, Light witnesses the individual’s death in a freak accident. Later, he uses the notebook to kill his mother’s murderer, Anthony Skomal, confirming its deadly capabilities.
At school, Light shares the Death Note with his classmate Mia and demonstrates its power by killing a dangerous criminal during a live hostage situation. The two team up to eliminate criminals and terrorists worldwide, adopting the alias “Kira” (derived from the Japanese word for “Killer”) to divert attention away from themselves. Their actions attract the attention of the enigmatic detective known as “L,” who deduces that Kira is a Seattle-based student with ties to law enforcement. L concludes that Kira can only kill individuals whose name and face are known.
As the investigation intensifies, L collaborates with Light’s father, a police detective, and assigns FBI agents to track Light and other suspects. When Mia suggests using the Death Note to kill the agents, Light refuses, but the agents later commit mass suicide—an act Light believes Ryuk orchestrated. Meanwhile, L publicly challenges Kira, leading to a confrontation between Light and the detective. Light devises a plan to use the Death Note against L by forcing his assistant, Watari, to reveal L’s true identity. With Mia’s help, Light hides the notebook before a police search of his home. The story unfolds as Light navigates the moral consequences of the Death Note’s power while evading L’s relentless pursuit.
