Description: In 2003, Staff Sergeant John Tyree of the United States Army Special Forces is shot in Afghanistan. Reflecting on his childhood visit to the U.S. Mint, he compares himself to a military coin, mentioning that his last thought before losing consciousness was of someone special. Two years earlier, in 2001, John is on leave in Charleston, South Carolina, where he meets Savannah Curtis, a college student volunteering with Habitat for Humanity during her spring break. At a bonfire party hosted by Savannah, John meets her neighbor, Tim, and his autistic son, Alan. Over the next two weeks, John and Savannah grow closer, eventually falling in love. Savannah also meets John’s father, who is deeply invested in his coin collection.
Savannah suggests to John that his father might have Asperger’s Syndrome, similar to Alan. This conversation upsets John, leading to a confrontation where he accidentally injures Tim. Savannah distances herself from John, but he later apologizes to Tim, who agrees to relay a message to her. Before John returns to duty, he and Savannah spend one final day together, promising to maintain their relationship through letters and to share everything with each other.
John and Savannah plan to build a future together after his military service ends. However, the September 11 attacks prompt John and his team to extend their deployments, delaying their reunion for months, then years. Meanwhile, Savannah grows closer to Tim and decides to dedicate her life to helping autistic children by establishing a farm and horse stables. Over the following two years, John and Savannah’s relationship persists through their heartfelt letters.
