Storyline:
In the autumn of 1959, shy Todd Anderson starts his junior year at Welton Academy, an exclusive all-boys preparatory school in Vermont. He is paired with Neil Perry, one of Welton’s top students, as his roommate. Todd soon meets Neil’s friends: Knox Overstreet, Richard Cameron, Steven Meeks, Gerard Pitts, and Charlie Dalton.
On their first day, they are introduced to John Keating, an unconventional English teacher and former Rhodes Scholar who is also a Welton alumnus. Keating inspires his students with the motto “carpe diem,” encouraging them to seize the day and make their lives extraordinary. His unique teaching methods include having students stand on his desk to gain new perspectives, tearing out pages from their textbooks to challenge conventional thinking, and encouraging them to express their individuality.
When Neil learns that Keating was part of the Dead Poets Society, an unsanctioned club during his time at Welton, he revives the group. Neil and his friends secretly gather in a nearby cave to read and compose poetry. As the school year progresses, Keating’s lessons and the club’s activities motivate the students to pursue their passions and live authentically.
Knox Overstreet falls for Chris Noel, a cheerleader dating a local football player. Neil discovers his love for acting and lands the role of Puck in a local production of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” despite his father’s insistence that he focus on academics to secure a future in medical school. Meanwhile, Keating helps Todd overcome his insecurities, leading him to write and recite a spontaneous poem in front of the class.
Their journey of self-discovery and individuality attracts the attention of the strict headmaster, Gale Nolan, setting the stage for a poignant and transformative experience.
