Description: “Dead for a Dollar,” a 2022 American Western film, was written and directed by Walter Hill. The movie features Christoph Waltz, Willem Dafoe, and Rachel Brosnahan in lead roles. The story centers around a bounty hunter, played by Waltz, who is hired to locate a businessman’s missing wife, portrayed by Brosnahan. Set in 1897 in the New Mexico Territory, the plot follows bounty hunter Max Borlund as he embarks on a mission to find Rachel Kidd, the wife of businessman Martin Kidd. Rachel is allegedly being held for ransom in Chihuahua, Mexico, by Elijah Jones, an African-American deserter. However, Max soon discovers that Rachel fled her abusive husband willingly to be with Elijah. Along the way, Max confronts his long-time enemy, Joe Cribbens, a gambler and outlaw whom he had previously imprisoned.
The film premiered at the 79th Venice International Film Festival on September 6, 2022, and was released in the United States on September 30, 2022, by Quiver Distribution. It marks Waltz’s return to the Western genre after “Django Unchained” (2012) and Hill’s comeback as a director following “The Assignment” (2016).
Principal photography took place in Santa Fe, New Mexico, from August 24 to September 21, 2021. The production employed approximately 80 crew members, 20 principal cast members, and 40 background actors and extras from New Mexico.
During filming, a grievance was filed by actor Shawn-Caulin Young against stunt coordinator Allan Graf. Young alleged that Graf failed to adequately supervise stunts and was hostile on set. He also claimed that proper protective gear was not provided during scenes involving pyrotechnics and explosives, resulting in an incident where he was struck by shrapnel and gunpowder debris.
