Description: In 2009, a plague, transmitted by an infected bat, turned most of the world’s population into immortal vampires. As the human population drastically declined, vampires faced a critical shortage of blood. Without it, they degenerate into psychotic, bat-like creatures known as “subsiders.” Most humans are captured and farmed for blood, while scientists work on creating a synthetic blood substitute. Since sunlight is deadly to vampires, they rely on underground passages and UV-filtered vehicles for safe travel, while the remaining free humans move during the day, hiding in open spaces.
By 2019, Edward Dalton, a hematologist, leads the research for Bromley Marks, the largest supplier of human blood in the US. Alongside his colleague Christopher Caruso, Edward is developing a blood substitute. One night, while driving home after a failed experiment, Edward accidentally forces another vehicle off the road. Discovering the occupants are humans, he hides them from the police. Their leader, Audrey, learns Edward’s name and profession from his ID badge before they part ways.
At home, Edward is visited by his estranged brother, Frankie, who gifts him a bottle of pure human blood. This reignites their long-standing disagreement—Edward refuses to consume human blood, opting for animal blood instead, while Frankie embraces his vampire identity. Later, a subsider from their neighborhood breaks into the house, forcing the brothers to kill it.
The next day, Audrey arrives at Edward’s home with instructions for a meeting. There, Edward meets Lionel “Elvis” Cormac, a human who was once a vampire. Before Elvis can explain his reversion, a military team, accompanied by Frankie, arrives to capture Cormac and Audrey. Audrey knocks Frankie unconscious, and the three escape. Elvis reveals that he was cured of vampirism after a car crash exposed him to sunlight for just the right amount of time, turning him human again. Edward agrees to help Cormac recreate the cure and prevent the genocide of humanity.
