**Storyline:**
Ana Clark, a nurse at Milwaukee County Hospital, returns home to her husband Luis after a long shift. Caught up in a date night, they miss an emergency news broadcast. The next morning, a neighbor’s child attacks and kills Luis, who reanimates as a zombie and turns on Ana. She escapes in her car but crashes and loses consciousness. When she wakes, she joins a group of survivors, including police sergeant Kenneth Rhodes, electronics salesman Michael Shaunessy, and petty criminal Andre with his pregnant wife, Luda.
The group takes refuge in a nearby mall but is attacked by a zombie security guard, who bites Luda. Three mall guards—C.J., Bart, and Terry—demand the survivors surrender their weapons in exchange for shelter. As they secure the mall, they spot Andy, a survivor trapped in his gun store across the zombie-filled parking lot. A TV broadcast advises killing zombies by shooting them in the head, a tactic the survivors adopt.
The next day, a delivery truck carrying more survivors arrives, pursued by zombies. Among them are Norma, Steve, Tucker, Monica, Glen, Frank, and his daughter Nicole. A sick woman in their group dies and reanimates, revealing that the infection spreads through bites. Luda hides her bite from the group, though Andre knows. Frank, who is bitten, isolates himself and is later killed by Kenneth after reanimating.
Kenneth and Andy develop a friendship by communicating via messages on a whiteboard. Meanwhile, Ana and Michael, as well as Nicole and Terry, grow closer. When the power fails, some survivors venture to the parking garage to activate the emergency generator and find a friendly dog, which Nicole names Chips.
