Description: The United States faces devastation from a mysterious plague that turns the recently deceased into flesh-eating ghouls. As the crisis unfolds, millions perish and reanimate into zombies. Despite government efforts, social order crumbles. While rural areas and the National Guard manage to combat the zombie hordes in open spaces, urban centers descend into chaos.
In Philadelphia, WGON TV traffic reporter Stephen Andrews and his pregnant girlfriend, producer Fran Parker, plot to steal the station’s helicopter to flee the city. Meanwhile, SWAT officer Roger DeMarco and his team raid a housing project where residents resist martial law by refusing to hand over their dead. During the raid, Wooley, a brutal and racist officer, kills unarmed civilians before being shot by Peter Washington, another officer.
That night, Stephen finds a dead security guard who had been protecting the helicopter. Roger and Peter join Fran and Stephen at a police dock, and together they escape Philadelphia in the stolen helicopter. After a few dangerous stops for fuel, the group discovers a shopping mall stocked with food, medicine, and supplies. They decide to stay, securing the mall by camouflaging entrances and blocking doors with trucks to keep the undead out.
