Description: The story of “Dating Amber” is set in 1995 Ireland, where two teenagers, Eddie and Amber, face constant homophobic abuse and decide to hide their true sexualities by pretending to be a heterosexual couple. Amber dreams of escaping her life, overshadowed by her father’s suicide, to embrace a lesbian punk lifestyle in a more liberal environment. She secretly rents caravans to teenage couples in need of privacy to save money for a move to London. Eddie, unsure of his sexuality, plans to follow his distant and often absent father into the Irish Army.
During their visits to Dublin, they gradually immerse themselves in the city’s gay culture. However, Eddie is caught kissing another man in a gay bar by someone from their hometown, leading to a panicked confrontation. Meanwhile, Amber starts a relationship with Sarah, a girl she meets in Dublin. When Amber comes out to her mother, her mother accepts her and meets Sarah, understanding her daughter’s need to be with her girlfriend. Amber is eventually outed to the town through the local priest.
Eddie struggles to accept that his relationship with Amber is over and attempts to pursue a heterosexual relationship with a schoolmate, Tracey, before joining the army. On the day of his enlistment, Amber arrives at the barracks and offers him her savings to help him escape living a lie. Eddie finally embraces his sexuality and accepts the money to buy a train ticket for a new life. As he opens the box containing Amber’s savings, he finds half of a photo booth picture inside. The movie concludes with both characters smiling, finally accepting their true selves.
