**Storyline:**
Robert Bilott, a corporate defense attorney based in Cincinnati, Ohio, works for the law firm Taft Stettinius & Hollister. He is approached by farmer Wilbur Tennant, who knows Robert’s grandmother, seeking help to investigate a series of unexplained animal deaths in Parkersburg, West Virginia. Tennant links these deaths to the chemical manufacturing giant DuPont and provides Robert with a collection of videotapes as evidence.
Upon visiting the Tennant farm, Robert discovers that 190 cows have died under unusual circumstances, displaying symptoms such as bloated organs, blackened teeth, and tumors. Phil Donnelly, a DuPont attorney, claims ignorance of the case but offers assistance. To uncover the truth, Robert files a lawsuit to access information about the chemicals dumped at the site. When no relevant details are found in the EPA report, he suspects the chemicals may not be regulated.
At an industry event, Robert confronts Phil, resulting in a heated argument. DuPont attempts to overwhelm Robert by sending hundreds of boxes of documents, aiming to bury the evidence. Despite this, Robert identifies numerous references to PFOA, a chemical unfamiliar in medical literature. Late one night, Robert’s pregnant wife, Sarah, finds him removing carpet and inspecting their kitchen pans. He learns that PFOA, or perfluorooctanoic acid, is used in Teflon production and is present in nonstick cookware across American households.
Robert uncovers that DuPont has been testing PFOA for decades, discovering its links to cancer and birth defects, but kept these findings secret. The company disposed of thousands of tons of toxic waste in a landfill near the Tennant farm. PFOA and similar compounds are “forever chemicals,” persistent in the bloodstream and accumulating over time.
