Description: The 2012 movie *Dark Shadows* follows the story of Barnabas Collins, a wealthy young man from Liverpool who, along with his family, settles in the New World, founding the town of Collinsport in Maine and building their grand estate, Collinwood. However, their lives take a dark turn when Barnabas rejects the advances of his servant, Angelique, who is secretly a witch. Out of jealousy, Angelique uses dark magic to kill Barnabas’ parents and curses him, ensuring that “all he loves will die.” As a result, his fiancée, Josette, dies tragically, and Barnabas, in a desperate act, throws himself after her. He survives but is cursed by Angelique to live eternally as a vampire. She then turns the town against him, leading to his burial alive.
Fast forward to 1972, Maggie Evans, who resembles Josette, arrives at Collinwood to work as a governess. She adopts the name Victoria Winters and meets the dysfunctional Collins family: Elizabeth, the matriarch; her brother Roger; her daughter Carolyn; Roger’s son David, who believes he sees his late mother’s ghost; and Dr. Hoffman, the family’s psychiatrist. Victoria is soon visited by Josette’s ghost. Meanwhile, a construction crew accidentally releases Barnabas from his tomb. Confused by modern technology and fashion, Barnabas returns to Collinwood, where he hypnotizes the caretaker, Willie, into serving him. He reveals his true identity to Elizabeth, the family matriarch, and requests to rejoin the family. Elizabeth introduces him as a distant relative from England, and together they use his knowledge of hidden treasure to restore the Collins family’s fortune.
As Barnabas adjusts to modern life, he falls for Victoria. However, Angelique, still alive and now the owner of a rival seafood company, remains obsessed with Barnabas. To protect Victoria, Barnabas reluctantly gives in to Angelique’s advances, leading to a guilt-ridden encounter. Despite this, Barnabas continues to reject her love, setting the stage for further conflict.
